Political parties ignore public libraries bill in the election manifesto: Gumtala

Punjab Vidhan Sabha Elections-Jan-Feb-2017
Amritsar, January 24, 2017: The Punjabi Writers Co-operative Society Ltd, Ludhiana/Amritsar has appealed to political parties to include public libraries bill in their election manifesto .In a joint statement Dr Bikram Singh Ghuman president and Dr Charanjit Singh Gumtala member of the board of directors stated that Tamil Nadu passed such legislation in 1948. Even Haryana passed a similar act in 1989.

All states have passed such legislation but Punjab has not even introduced the bill in the state assembly. ‘Shabad Parkash Punjab Public Library and Information Services Bill ‘ was prepared in 2011 by the then education minister S.Sewa Singh Sekhwan. Under this bill, the government had planned to set up a state central library, 22 district libraries, 141 block-level libraries, 157 town libraries and 12,282 village libraries. The entire project was to take 10 years to complete. In October 2011, Mr Sekhwan issued a statement that an ordinance will be passed by the state government to put the bill into effect before the enforcement of the election code (ahead of 2012 assembly polls). But Akali-BJP government did nothing in this regards in the last 5 years. It has opened wine shops in every village but not libraries.

There is a great potential of passengers from Amritsar to Abu Dhabi : Sameep Singh Gumtala

Amritsar, April 4, 2016: Amritsar Vikas Manch has requested Jet Airways to start direct flights from Sri Guru Ram Das Ji Airport Amritsar to Abu Dhabi, UAE’S commercial capital. In a letter to Jet Airways Amritsar Station Manager Vivek Suri, Vice President Corporate Communications Manish Kalghatgi, Etihad Airways USA Manager Jon Spring, Manch Regional Representative from USA, Sameep Singh Gumtala stated that there is a great potential of passengers from Amritsar to Abu Dhabi.

The introduction of this service will allow passengers to avail of multiple travel options through Abu Dhabi to destinations in Europe, North America, Africa, South East Asia, Middle East and the Gulf on its partner Etihad Airways. Currently, to travel on Jet/Etihad connections, passengers has to travel to Delhi on Jet Airways, wait long hours at Delhi and then do another stop at Abu Dhabi. With this direct flight, guests can enjoy the advantage of direct seamless connectivity from Amritsar to Abu Dhabi with one stop connections to many other international destinations. The letter stated, after Jet Airways deal with Etihad in 2013, it was reported in the media, that Jet Airways has plans to connect 23 India cities to Abu Dhabi to synergize operations with Etihad Airways.

Jet and Etihad had also announced that eight Indian cities will come on the map by 2013 and in the second phase, Jet will fly to six more destinations directly to Abu Dhabi including Amritsar, Jaipur, Lucknow, Goa and Mangalore by the end of 2014. Mr. Gumtala highlighted in the letter that, out of these six additional planned destinations to be covered by Jet Airways, all the other 5 cities except Amritsar were connected with Abu Dhabi in 2014 and early 2015.

On 29 March 2016, Jet has started direct flight from Ahmedabad to Abu Dhabi but so far there has been no such announcement yet by the airline regarding Amritsar. Jet Airways Chairman, Naresh Goyal, who is a Punjabi is discriminating with the people from State by not starting any direct international flights after his airline cancelled Asr-London direct flight. Qatar Airways, a competitor of Jet/Etihad is doing tremendous business with its flight from Amritsar to Doha and connecting passengers to all of its more than 140 destinations around the world. The important advantage and a plus point is that this direct flight to Abu Dhabi will enable to earn two fold business, one with the flights from Amritsar to Europe and second one on North American sector. The best options are flight from Amritsar to Abu Dhabi and then travel onto Etihad flight into USA including west coast cities of San Francisco and LA, or to Canada (Toronto, Vancouver, and Calgary), and also Australia where new wave of Punjabi immigrants is now settled.

Amritsar, 19 Nov 2015:– A city-based NGO has written to Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu seeking extension of the eastern rail freight corridor up to the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari. The NGO has also urged the railways to initiate a campaign to turn its properties green and take other measures to bolster trade and travel.

Gubir Singh of Dalbir Foundation, in a communiqué sent to the minister, requested the extension of eastern rail freight corridor till the Attari border. “Although it was approved by the last government, there were some indications that it is being reconsidered,” he said. Gubir Singh said merits of the proposal have enhanced trade prospects with Afghanistan, CIS nations and Pakistan and it can create opportunity and establish bonds. This can bring the rail line into the ICP (only 400 metres away) to improve handling of freight in a secure manner as is being done globally. “Start container movement for better movement of bulk cargo through scanning devices to check the movement of contraband,” he requested.
